What is 500 Kindnesses?
500 Kindnesses was a charity event of a different sort. Instead of raising money for a specific charity, we asked you, our “sponsors” to pledge acts of kindness to friends, relatives, and strangers and then let us share them (anonymously if you prefer) with others online. Between the founding of this project and their trip to New York they raised over 400 acts of kindness. An additional 1,044 pledges were raised after they returned.

On July 1, 2012, Daegan and Todd got on a tandem bicycle and headed east. Over the next month, they travelled over 1,500 kilometres from Toronto (what some consider the rudest and coldest city in Canada) to New York City (What some consider the rudest and coldest city in the states) by way of Ottawa, Montreal, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and New Jersey. Along the way they relied as much as possible on the kindness of strangers for lodging via Couchsurfing.org. At the same time, we collected stories of acts of kindness given and received and shared them with our readers.

For every pledge made, $1 was be donated to the Toronto People with AIDS Foundation. More info here.

Thanks to William Murphy for the kindness image.
